Why should I choose the Waterford Church of Christ?

Choosing a church to become part of is a choice that is challenging enough for Christians, well versed in the biblical teachings, not to mention for someone who doesn’t know what the scriptures direct and have not even decided to commit to being a Christian. I will try to keep this discussion direct and to the point. I will have many links to explanation pages that will have bible verses and explanations for that specific topic.

It is a Bible based church.

We believe that the Holy Bible is God’s inspired word and as such is the ultimate authority as to what we do, how we think and the way that we worship God. Any belief or doctrine should have a specific scripture that clearly supports that belief or doctrine.

It is a loving church.

The words that Jesus Christ Himself said were, "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:35

The Waterford Church of Christ is a loving church, that prays for each other, is genuinely interested in each other and helps each other as God gives us opportunity.

It is an autonomous church.

We are an individual congregation, just like an individual person. We do not have a national, world or even a local area organization that oversees us. We are responsible directly to God. This allows us to make whatever decisions that need to be made based off of the guidance of the word of God, the needs of the local congregation and the wisdom of the leaders of the congregation. We are not responsible for other churches, nor are they responsible for us, other than Christians being responsible for other Christians as the Bible indicates.

The church has a building.

The church is the people of the congregation. The bible in many passages refers to the people who worship God in various locations as the church, which means those who are called out to assemble. Since the church is the people, we have purchased a building that is useful for our worship together, gatherings and group activities. Having a building is not something the scriptures directs us to have, but the scriptures do indicate that the early church sometimes used the synagogues, or buildings that they used as Jews before they became Christians.

That sums up what the scripture tells us that God requires of his church. Each individual in their own spiritual walk with all that it entails is part of the church and the "church experience".

Of course each person who is part of any organization has expectations of what they will receive from the group and will often make their decision to attend based on this criteria.
